By integrating Anthropic's Claude into Microsoft 365 alongside OpenAI, Microsoft proved that AI models are replaceable utilities, not the destination.
In March 2026, Microsoft launched Copilot Cowork, directly integrating Anthropic’s Claude models into Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Enterprise workers can now select either OpenAI or Anthropic from a simple menu to execute multi-step tasks inside their existing spreadsheets, requiring no new software or separate logins.
Microsoft is OpenAI’s largest financial backer. Bringing its fiercest competitor into the M365 crown jewel signals a structural shift in industry power. It follows the exact pattern of the early web: the underlying routing protocols quickly became invisible to the user. What mattered was who owned the browser. By reducing the foundational models of the AI boom to interchangeable options in a settings panel, Microsoft is stripping the AI labs of their leverage.
The AI is no longer the product. It is an invisible weather condition powering the interface where the actual work happens.
